Acupuncture is a modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine that focuses on correcting imbalances of energy in the body. From its inception in China more than 2,500 years ago, acupuncture has been used traditionally to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, as well as to improve overall health and well-being.
Acupuncture consists of the gentle insertion and stimulation of thin, disposable sterile needles at strategic points near the surface of the body. Over 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body connect with 14 major pathways, called meridians. Chinese medicine practitioners believe that these meridians conduct energy (qi or chi) between the surface of the body and internal organs. It is the energy that regulates spiritual, emotional, mental and physical balance. When the flow of energy is disrupted, either through poor health habits or other circumstances, pain or disease or both can result. Acupuncture helps to keep the normal flow of this energy unblocked and restores balance within the body.
Because the goal of acupuncture is to promote and restore the balance of energy, which flows throughout the body, the benefits of acupuncture can be applied to a variety of conditions, for both men and women. A list of just some of the applications for acupuncture include:
- Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
- Chronic pain syndromes
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Low back pain and musculoskeletal disorders
- Migraine headaches
- Parkinson’s disease
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Recovery from stroke or trauma
- Rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis
